[PIN of the week] 10.14.13

Useful, beautiful, not to mention frugal!  This would be a really fun project for an awkward space or stairwell.  I really love the idea of using materials that are simple to acquire (and presumable assemble), to create a visual space in the home that is both functional and appealing.

I love books, they are fun to read and beautiful, but often become cumbersome to their owners.  Book lovers tend to acquire them without even noticing and before you know it they are everywhere!  I highly suggest that you find the space you wish to dedicate to books and set limits.  Perhaps a certain bookshelf.  Once that unit is full, challenge yourself to purge less meaningful books, those you didn't care for, those you plan on never reading again, those you borrowed, etc.  Make space for your new books to fit into your current space rather than adding more space to fill!

Here is it...kinda makes your mouth water huh?  "Why didn't I think of that!"  Those words roll off of my tongue every time I visit the PINterest mind suck.

Anyways, back to the PIN of the week...
I am a big fan of finding ways to get things off of the kitchen counter.  There is good reason for this at our house:

  1. I have a toddler at home and want to minimize the risks associated with him grabbing for something he should not have.
  2. Spill clean up is always easier when you don't have to move things or clutter out of the way.
  3. We have a small kitchen and counter space comes at a premium.  No reason to waste it on canisters of flour that we seldom use.
  4. I like my kitchen to look neat and tidy... (let me be honest and human, it is not always!)

Someone once said "A place for everything and everything has a place", or something like that.  In my experience, it is true that if you give your "things" a home they are more likely to get put away.  However, as an organizer I often suggest people leave things in easy to access areas without lids or doors if posssible.  Remember, any barrier to put it away or get it out leads to piles of clutter.  This is something that I work with at all my clients appointments.  So while we can minimize clutter in the kitchen for example, we can not put everything away, but get more creative on how we use the space.

After years of a counter top paper towel holder, we went for an under cabinet bar and I hate it.  It can not easily be used with one hand.  That would also be my concern for this system.  I would love to see pictures if anyone tries this at home.

What are your thoughts?
